“The Way We Do Things Around Here.”

The guiding principles your business is built on — named, owned, and written down.

“Families assume everything and discuss nothing.” — O’Malley & McEnerney
Why This Tool Exists

The problem isn't that your business lacks guiding principles. It's that they've never been written down — and no one applies them the same way.

“Families assume everything and discuss nothing.” It’s the truth behind more family business problems than any other single factor.

The assumptions that do the most damage are the ones nobody ever thought to question — because everyone assumed everyone else already knew.

But I thought that's how we did things.
I understood we could make an exception here.
That rule applies to everyone — except him.
The one nobody says out loud.
The Dice Roll Problem
In most family businesses, guiding principles don't get applied — they get rolled. Who gets held to the standard depends on the day, the relationship, whose kid it is, and who's watching. That's not a foundation. That's a dice roll. And you can't operate a business — or hold a family together — on a dice roll.

This tool was created to take the dice off the table — to replace the roll with a foundation. Guiding principles that apply across the board, that everybody knows, and everybody owns.

Most family businesses have some version of a mission, a vision, and a set of values. This tool is about something harder — the guiding principles those values are supposed to produce, and whether they're actually being applied consistently.

The Most Powerful Part

After you score your truth, you can invite up to five others — a family member, a key employee, a trusted advisor — to score the same 24 statements independently.

The gap between your truth and theirs — that’s not a problem to manage. That’s the conversation your business needs to have.
